SAMPIT to Banjamasin

SAMPIT -

Rolling into SAMPIT was rather interesting. The highway saw heavy traffic and everyone racing towards Palagkaraya - capital South Kalimantan ( Selatan ). We were impressed with this city and wanted to stay there for a night. But my friend Ah Men have however confirmed our accomodation at " Rattan Inn " in Banjarmasin. This 3 star hotel has just underwent renovation and is now a 4 stars hotel, which I pointed to the manager on his missing star at the main entrance.

However what was unpleasant was large smoke screen - reult of land clearings on both side of the highways. Sporadic burnings created smoke screens along the way and the sky was not a polluted. At some spots, there were however artistics structures that were put in place and these places do have clear blue skies. the 3 pic below shows its contrast

Pic above show the very contrasting environment. While efforts are being made to beautify the town like the 2 pic on the right, the above left pic shows clearing and burning of land area besides the highway. Sporadic burning can be traced for miles making an otherwise clear blue sky into a greyish one.

At Hotel Idola we met some IMI members and they were kind to provide us with advise to Manjarmasin. The couple who own GT tyres even offered to inspect our tyres and aligned our car if we pay them a visit, for which we did. We finally reached Banjarmasin at about 7pm and was met by Ah Man and family. Pic below shows Ah Men and the IMI members.
