Rolling Into SURABAYA

Sunset At Sea

KM Kirana. The evening before we sail into Surabaya, watching sunset at sea was somewhat different with what we saw at Mt Kota Kinabalu. At sea, the breeze was cool but the sun and the salty sea makes one feel sticky and sleepy after an hour on the deck. At Mt Kinabalu, the air was cold and as the sun set, night falls quickly as the air gets colder and colder.

Learning how to take pics under such circumstances is a joy, because you can actually spot differences within seconds. The modern cameras are so well set that the pictures that appears are so beautiful - a lot of difference when viewed with the naked eyes. Even tilting the camera vertically gives a different effect. What a discovery for a novice like me

Surabaya Port. We came into the port in the morning and what a sight. It is extremely busy judging from the number of ships berth along the way in. Logging barges, coal carrying barges, container port activities were at its fullest. Surabaya must be one of the busiest port in Indonesia. Probably much more active than Pontianak. Yet to see Tg Priok though.
Rolling out of KM Kirana was yet another experience. Everyone move out of the ship thru the Roll-on Roll -off ramp. It was a good 20 minutes before the few cars and trucks were allowed to move on after all the passengers were discharged.. Going into Surabaya to look for accommodation, we pass thru a busy street which has a dragon arch, symbols of Chinatown which we could not have mistaken.

Dinner at Bon Ami with Bing Bing and Moesa was a real experience. Truly Indonesian but with a Peranakan twist to the cooking style, Bing Bing insisted that we taste what she reckon we must not do without. Ambience was really nice and the cake shop was at hand for me to buy a few bread for our trip to Mt Bromo. The restaurant looks like a old colonial Bangalore , tastefully done up. The crowd at the restaurant show that it is well patronised

orBreakfast early next morning at Hotel Mercur was again something different. Besides Soto Ayam , Indonesian " Jamu " was available for you to beef up your energy.

We finally left Hotel Mercur just before lunch heading towards Mt Bromo, 2329m high. We had to hit for Tongas, which was just short of PROBOLINGO to reach to our destination. On our way, we managed to pass thru LAPINDO, an area which witnessed a disaster some months back because of " Mud Slide ". Pic below shows the mud slide area to be vast and looks like a sea. Some part of it, we noticed is still smokey. Moesa mentioned that the mud slide was caused by some oil drilling operation. Mt Bromo here we come !!!
