Banjarmasin - Monkey island

Monkey island - Pulau Kembang
After visiting the wet market, our very enterprising boatman showed us another interesting tourists attraction. Pulau Kembang . From a distance, the pondoks looks very attractive and we just wondered whether only the monkeys stays there or do they have the keepers as well.

We were told that there are many monkeys on the island. History has it that the Chinese erected a temple ( middle pic below ) and will go often , esp during weekends , to feed the monkeys.
Today, there are guides who would usher us like bodyguards, armed with sticks, to chase the Macaques species away as some are seen to be aggressive and encroaching. Neo Chian had his pocket searched by one of those macaques when he kept peanuts in his pockets.

Some of the guides, esp the ladies , has their faced painted white. Not sure why or what the significant was .

At the jetty the monkeys are plentiful as tourists feed them with peanuts, while some of them ransacked the boats. Boatmen did take the necessary precautions to hide any foodstuff or fruits which were bought during our earlier tour to the floating market.

The boat which we chartered for Rp 100,000 ( S$ 14 ) was really worth it as our party of 5 spend 3 hours visiting both the floating market and the monkey island .
